Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS) Recorder (Upper Thames - various locations)

Opportunity image

Our WCBS Recorders help us to understand butterflies in their local area and, by extension, across the UK. They inspire people to better understand the butterflies that they see, contributing to scientific monitoring and supporting a major citizen science project – the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS).

The Wider Countryside Buttery Survey takes place on randomly selected 1km squares throughout the UK, this gives us a good representation of how butterflies are doing across the country. To take part, a volunteer is assigned one of the squares and visits a minimum of two times in July and August. Further visits may be undertaken between May and August with ten days between them. On each visit, a set transect is walked and all butterflies and day-flying moths seen are recorded. This provides very useful information to help us understand the status and trends of butterflies throughout the UK.

At Butterfly Conservation, we want to create a world where butterflies and moths are enjoyed by everyone, forever. We need people to survey WCBS squares to collect data. This data is used to inform decisions which help to conserve butterflies, both locally and nationally.

You will be volunteering with a wide range of people helping us to monitor butterflies in your local environment.
