Threatened Species Surveyor - Large Heath

Opportunity image

We need people to record the Large Heath, a butterfly on our threatened species list. This data is used to inform decisions which help to conserve butterflies and moths, both locally and nationally.

Survey volunteering could include either flight surveys in June and July, or habitat management assessments in late summer. Full training and support is provided on every survey.

Landscapes involved in the project include:

  • Migneint (North Wales)
  • Berwyn (North Wales)
  • Myndd Hiraethog (North Wales)
  • Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses (Northeast Wales)
  • Afon Eden (North Wales)
  • Cors Fochno (Mid Wales)
  • Cors Caron (Mid Wales)

Please note: Large Heath peatland habitat can be difficult terrain. Expect long walks, potentially walking steep hills before reaching the habitat, and every site will have areas of bog and unstable terrain. Wellies are required.

Our conservation work depends on us knowing how butterfly and moth populations are doing, and we are lucky to have over forty years' worth of data collected by volunteers to help us in our mission to conserve butterflies and moths.

At Butterfly Conservation, we want to create a world where butterflies and moths are enjoyed by everyone, forever.
