Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS) Champion (West Midlands)
This volunteer role supports the coordination of the Wider Countryside Butterfly Scheme (WCBS) surveys in the Branch area as part of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS). Please visit the UKBMS website for further information about the scheme and surveys - https://ukbms.org/wider-countryside-butterfly-survey
The WCBS Champion helps support, recruit and guide volunteer WCBS Recorders, assign WCBS Recorders to suitable survey squares, and ensure survey data are submitted and shared effectively. The role plays an important part in monitoring and conserving butterflies and day-flying moths, while connecting with a community of people passionate about wildlife and citizen science.
The WCBS is based on a network of randomly selected 1km squares across the UK. WCBS Recorders visit their assigned square/s and record all butterflies seen along two 1km transects through the square. The surveys' core recording period is in July and August, and a minimum of two surveys visits are carried out.
