UKBMS Transect Surveyor (Belmont Railway, Stanmore)
Our Transect Walkers help us to understand butterflies in their local area and, by extension, across the UK. They inspire people to better understand the butterflies that they see.
Stanmore Railway is managed by London Borough of Harrow and Friends Group. It is a former railway line from Stanmore to Wealdstone, it runs within a broad strip of mixed deciduous woodland, dominated by oak. Much of the rest comprises of the site comprises scrub, tall herbs and scattered trees. More open areas support tall herbs and grassland, with wild flowers such as bird's-foot-trefoil, and hoary ragwort.
Transect recording has been intermittent at the site but data goes back to 2000. The butterfly records are dominated by hedgerow species commonly found in a wildlife corridor in an urban setting. We are keen to re-establish regular recording to monitor how butterflies respond to the habitat improvements. We are seeking either one recorder or someone who could be part of a team to carry out week walks.
Please refer to the UKBMS website for mroe information about what is involved in carrying out a butterfly transect - https://ukbms.org/get-involved
For any queries about getting involved with this transect please contact the regional Transect Coordintaor, Paul Busby via paul.busby@butterfly-conservation.goassemble.com.
At Butterfly Conservation, we want to create a world where butterflies and moths are enjoyed by everyone, forever. We need people to walk transects to collect data. This data is used to inform decisions which help to conserve butterflies, both locally and nationally.
You will be volunteering with a wide range of people helping us to monitor butterflies in your local environment.
