UKBMS Transect Surveyor (Bunkers Park, Hemel Hempstead)
Our Transect Walkers help us to understand butterflies in their local area and, by extension, across the UK. They inspire people to better understand the butterflies that they see.
Bunkers Park is located on the south side of Hemel Hempstead near the village of Bedmond . Created in the 1990's it includes managed woodland, chalk and neutral grassland, parts of which are managed using conservation grazing. A new extension to the park has recently opened and Butterfly Conservation are advising on the restoration of chalk grassland in that area.
The variety of habitat provides potential for a good range of butterfly species. The site has not been well recorded in recent years and we are keen to establish regular recording to monitor how butterflies respond to the habitat improvements. We are seeking either one recorder or someone who could be part of a team to carry out weekly walks as part of a standadised butterfly transect contributing to the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS).
Please refer to the UKBMS website for mroe information about what is involved in carrying out a butterfly transect - https://ukbms.org/get-involved
For any queries about getting involved with this transect please contact the regional Transect Coordintaor, Andrew Wood via andrew.wood@butterfly-conservation.goassemble.com.
At Butterfly Conservation, we want to create a world where butterflies and moths are enjoyed by everyone, forever. We need people to walk transects to collect data. This data is used to inform decisions which help to conserve butterflies, both locally and nationally.
You will be volunteering with a wide range of people helping us to monitor butterflies in your local environment.
